Capital Region EARTH DAY 2018

Sunday April 22 - 11AM to 4PM

We're bringing together people from the Capital Region and sharing knowledge and ideas about environmental issues and action. How do New Yorkers affect the environment, and how does climate change affect us here in NY? Can we create a community dedicated to preserving our environment?

Location: B90 UAlbany Campus Center, 1400 Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12222

This event focuses on the importance of buying locally, repurposing and up-cycling, food waste & composting, understanding your carbon footprint, and advocating for changes to local regulations inhibiting sustainable energy. There will be activities and talks geared towards children as well, so bring everyone!

-Creating a healthy local food culture
-How solar panels can be part of your life
-Challenges renewable energy companies are facing and how you can help them
-Empowerment of local citizens - successful petitions including the local resistance to the proposed Constitution pipeline
-How to approach your local government
-How money $$$ influences climate change decisions
-Values from other cultures - the importance of thinking long-term and acting with awareness
-Upcycled Fashion
-Local Initiatives for children
-Reducing Plastic Microbeads: Where they exist, how they impact the environment and alternative products without them
-Incorporating activism in your art
-Growing your own food & having your own chicken coop


11AM - Acoustic Open Mic, Open House & Yoga

- Acoustic Open Mic signup begins at 10:30 - 10 minutes or 3 songs

- Reserve your spot for yoga here

- Collect raffle tickets at the activity tables

12PM - Hear from your community members

- Jodi from CapSci will give a talk on climate change for children / teens 

- Ralf will introduce the Youth Climate Activism Group

- Zack from Alliance for Clean Energy NY

- Mark Lowery from the DEC Office of Climate Change will talk about New York State's Climate Smart Communities initiative

- Becky from Stop NY Pipeline will discuss solar energy options
